چکیده

The vibrational redistribution of energy following internal conversion in glyoxal has been studied in a molecular beam using the "pump-and-probe" technique. A beam of glyoxal is initially pumped from So to a selected vibronic level of Sl. After internal conversion occurs, a tunable dye laser is used to probe the hot band absorption of the molecules by re-excitation into Sl. The total fluorescence as a function of probe laser wavelength is observed. The excitation spectrum is broad and featureless in the red but shows sharp structure in the vicinity of the pump laser wavelength. However, the sharp structure depends on the portion of the rotational contour excited. The experimental results show that the redistribution of energy is nonstatistical among the isoenergetic levels. This is explained by assuming that combination bands of low quanta of vibrations are the accepting levels in the internal conversion process and that these accepting levels undergo slow energy redistribution.

Ultrafast dynamics through conical intersections and intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution in styrene.

We report a femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (TRPES) investigation of internal conversion in the first two excited singlet electronic states of styrene. We find that radiationless decay through an S(1)/S(0) conical intersection occurs on a timescale of ∼4 ps following direct excitation to S(1) with 0.6 eV excess energy, but that the same process is significantly slower (∼20 ...

Intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution in bridged azulene-anthracene compounds: ballistic energy transport through molecular chains.

Intramolecular vibrational energy flow in excited bridged azulene-anthracene compounds is investigated by time-resolved pump-probe laser spectroscopy. The bridges consist of molecular chains and are of the type (CH(2))(m) with m up to 6 as well as (CH(2)OCH(2))(n) (n=1,2) and CH(2)SCH(2). After light absorption into the azulene S(1) band and subsequent fast internal conversion, excited molecule...

Pulling the levers of photophysics: how structure controls the rate of energy dissipation.

The process of internal conversion is at the heart of many chemical reactions by being responsible for the conversion of electronic excitation energy into vibrational energy. The ultrafast process from higher electronic states assures that it can rival competing pathways. This also implies that nuclear motion in only a very few vibrational degrees of freedom are involved in internal conversion—...

Mode-specific vibrational relaxation of photoexcited guanosine 5'-monophosphate and its acid form: a femtosecond broadband mid-IR transient absorption and theoretical study.

UV-pump/broadband-mid-IR-probe transient absorption (TA) experiments and ab initio quantum mechanical (QM) calculations were used to investigate the photophysics in heavy water of the neutral and acid forms of guanosine 5'-monophosphate (GMP and GMPD(+), respectively). Excited GMP undergoes ultrafast internal conversion (IC) and returns to the electronic ground state in less than one picosecond...

Ultrafast non-radiative decay of gas-phase nucleosides.

The ultrafast photo-physical properties of DNA are crucial in providing a stable basis for life. Although the DNA bases efficiently absorb ultraviolet (UV) radiation, this energy can be dissipated to the surrounding environment by the rapid conversion of electronic energy to vibrational energy within about a picosecond. The intrinsic nature of this internal conversion process has previously bee...
